The Settlement

The Settlement …..   Site of an old Maori Kaika, and later an early and unsuccessful shore whaling station. This small almost land locked cove is protected by a difficult and shallow reef, almost impassable by a vessel of any size, and only in the calmest of seas.

Te Puka a Maui …..   “The Anchor of Maui” refers to the legend of Maui fishing up the North Island from his waka


 

Rakiura  …… “Land of Glowing Skies … refers to the embarrassment of a Maori chief when rejected by a wahine

South Island …… An early European name… North, Middle and South Islands

New Lienster ….. Bestowed by the English Parliament period 1840-52  never in common use

Stewart Island …….  After William Stewart, mate vessel “Pegasus” who arrived Port Pegasus 1809, and drew a first competent chart of Port pegasus and the east coast of Stewart Island. Published in the “Oriental Navigator, 1816
