Stewart Island Place Names ……
Te Whara Whara ….. “A Name it shares with neighbouring Native Island” There was apparently a burial cave discovered by children around 100 years ago on the west end of the Island.
Coupars Island …… Stewart Coupar was a Scottish sealer recorded as living on the Neck in the 1830’s. I assume he must have lived on Te Whara Wara to have left his name there
Ulva Island …… Charles & Henriette Trail established the first Post Office at Post Office Bay on Coupars Island in 1872. They named their 20 acre “Estate” Ulva, after the Island of the same name off the coast of Scotland. This name gradually encompassed the whole Island.
