 Sails Ashore Lodge

We chose the name “Sails Ashore Lodge to reflect the close relationship the Island enjoys with the sea. Overlooking Halfmoon Bay and the islands of Foveaux Straits beyond Sails Ashore Boutique Lodge is a short 4 minutes stroll from the village waterfront, set in a private native and flower garden. Guests enjoy their own wing, each room with a private entrance.

Internal decor features extensive use of native Rimu timber, much of it salvaged from old logs, long sunk in a West Coast lake. Muted colours, original art and the best of fittings makes for a casual elegance.

Dear Iris & Peter
I truly had the most amazing time on Stewart Island. We all know (as I do now) what a fantastic place it is. But it was your imense kindness to me that made it such a memorable occasion. You mad the visit to Ulva Island very special indeed. And it was so good of you both to invite me to dinner. I very much enjoyed the chat and most delicious meal.

Hello Iris & Peter

We would like to thank you both for your efforts to make our short visit to Stewart Island memorable and enjoyable. The hikes and the visit to Ulva were among the highlights of our trip. You both made us feel so welcome and for the short while made the Island as well as us the centre off attention. We did appreciate your efforts and hope to be able to return to Stewart Island to get to know and its flora and wildlife even better.

Peter and Iris are so friendly and attentive. It is like visiting friends/family. The rooms are very comfortable – heating, fabulous shower, tea/coffee making facilities in the room as well as as wifi. Peter and Iris can’t do enough for their guests – from chauffeuring around Oban, answering questions and explaining how things work on the Island. The sitting room for guests provides comfort and stunning views. We took the ferry over to Ulva which was wonderful – Peter even showed us Parakeet chicks, recently hatched. Ulva is a must do – stunning scenery, easy paths, bush and beaches. You feel as though you have escaped modern life. The birdlife is amazing – we saw weka, tui, robins, parakeets all ‘up close’. We went on Peter’s Island history tour which was very interesting – seeing parts of Stewart Island you can’t easily walk to and hearing the stories of the past as well as how the Islanders live now.

Sails Ashore is highly recommended – it is all the little details that make the difference.

Sails Ashore, the completely renovated two guestroom lodge overlooking the Halfmoon Bay on Stewart Island, is a combination b and b, historical adventure, and guided tour all-in-one. Peter and Iris are supremely attentive, catering to every whim, and able to answer every question one might have regarding any aspect of Stewart Island: Natural history, economy, politics, you name it. Actually, they are pretty good on New Zealand too, and Peter gives a great guided tour of Ulva Island, the off-shore reserve that’s a must see for anyone interested in New Zealand’s flora and fauna (you might even see a kiwi in it’s natural setting). Every morning Iris had a new and delicious creation on the breakfast table, and if you happened to be there in the afternoon, there was either tea and homemade baked goods, or a cheese platter. Great location, great service, but above all, great hosts!

Peter and Iris Tait are incredible hosts. The house is immaculate and the view from the main room was incredible. Their basic knowledge of the area is incredible. The tour to Ulva Island was a special experience. It gave Peter a chance to demonstrate his phenomenal knowledge of the plants, birds, animals , ecology, human history, and how all this applies in the current environment. We had lovely talks and they knew where to eat, and volunteered excellent ideas for day excursions in town. They also stopped the rain every time we wanted to do an activity.
