Batty & a Moth
Our post of 1st June. raised a few queries as to whether it actually was a bat. Suggestions it was a moth. I tried several screen freezes but none really were conclusive, one way or another. But it was so big at a distance I was sure we had a bat. We’d had a couple of other “sightings” but nothing really conclusive
But last night we captured what I’m convinced is a bat, and it appeared to unsuccessfully chase a moth.
A later separate camera capture is definitely a moth, and quite different in all respects to our bat.
And it is almost certainly a LongTailed Bat…… for added info follow links to Wikipedia and DoC
So now a project is to find a high frequency microphone and a frequency responsive app for my cell phone to record what we’ve been seeing, as it appears to be a regular visitor. Probably attracted by the Infra red night light the camera uses.
As an aside we are also regularly seeing prowling cats. Obviously domestic cats, let out at night……. irritating to say the least.
I arrived on Stewart Island in 1969 as Forest Ranger. Since then I've fished commercially both in Fiordland and around Stewart Island then skippered our charter yacht in the same waters, and also down into the Southern Ocean. More recently we now have "Sails Ashore" B&B, and I also guide our guests and others on Ulva Island, introducing them to the natural world of Stewart island
