Bullers Mollymawk

Diomedia bulleri

The word mollymawk, which dates to the late 17th century, comes from the Dutch mallemok, which means mal – foolish and mok – gull.  (Wikipedia)

Bullers “Mollies” are very common around the Stewart Island coast, and are inveterate followers of fish boats. Superb soaring birds they are a joy to watch. There is some controversy regarding “Mollymawks” and an attempt to rename them as Albatross.

In my view the two groups are so visually different as to totally negate the proposal. Mollymawks are unbroken black from tip to tip along the upper wing, whereas Albatross the black is restricted to the outer upper wing, the body and inner wing white. And perhaps being slightly parochial as New Zealand is the home of more “Mollie” species than anyplace else, then surely local names should prevail.

Bullers are the smallest of the locally common Mollymawks

Size 750/800 mm

Stewart Island Electricity is generated using diesel fuel

Sails Ashore is Solar Powered

But we now produce 100 % of our electrical needs, and are completely "Off Grid", Excess electricity is used to heat our domestic hot water and central heating system and this has cut our non renewable heating fuel usage to around 20% of pre solar.. All cooking is electric, no more LPG.  See More .......

Kowhai Lane is also Solar powered,

Kowhai Lane is "Grid Tied" Excess production is used to heat water. Production beyond the house requirements is exported, thus cutting diesel use in the wider grid. At night Kowhai Lane Lodge receives power from the grid.

Like Sails Ashore, all cooking is electric,,,,, No LPG
