Mamaku …..   “To Leak” refers to way the tide “leaks” between the rocks making up the off shore reef

The headlands at both sides of Horseshoe Bay are home to a small number of Cyathea medullaris  or  “Mamakau”  ….. Black Tree Fern.  The name therefore MAY relate to the tree ferns
