Stewart Island Place Names ……
Albion Inlet
Albion Inlet ….. One of many “Classical” names which were bestowed by William Stewart in 1809, and appear on his chart of Port Pegasus
up inside Albion Inlet, on the south side at the entrance of Basin Creek is a small sandy beach named Waiharakeke, (Flax Stream) with a line of Flax bushes. These an almost certain pointer that Maori camped here. Harold Ashwell told me that further up Basin Creek is where Maori set off cross country to Easy Harbour, thus avoiding the perilous canoe passage around South Cape on the way to the birding islands. Canoes would be left spotted at Easy Harbour for the final part of the journey
Waiharakeke is the small beach just visible in the upper middle, beyond the small headland
