Bunkers Island

Stewart Island Place Names …… 

Hau Mai Te Raki …..   “Wind Blowing Hither from Heaven”   A comfort stop on the passage between Ruapuke and Rakiura

 

 

Bunkers Island  …… Named for Captain Eber Bunker, who arrived in 1809 on the vessel “Pegasus” on  a sealing expedition. They stuck a rock on the Island … not seriously … and named the Island Bunkers

Fancy Group  …… This name was in use prior to 1844, but is of unknown origin    (see Rakiura, Howard,  p 213)

The “Mummy” Islands …… A local name, as from the Village the Islands look like a reclining Egyptian mummy.
