 Sails Ashore Lodge

We chose the name Sails Ashore Lodge to reflect the close relationship the Island enjoys with the sea. Overlooking Halfmoon Bay and the islands of Foveaux Straits beyond Sails Ashore Boutique Lodge is a short 4 minutes stroll from the village waterfront, set in a private native and flower garden. Guests enjoy their own wing, each room with a private entrance.

Internal decor features extensive use of native Rimu timber, much of it salvaged from old logs, long sunk in a West Coast lake. Muted colours, original art and the best of fittings makes for a casual elegance.

We have instant online booking

Your Hosts Iris, Anne & Peter are fully vaccinated against Coronavirus
tait@sailsashore.co.nz

Please note Sails Ashore is two night and Kowhai Lane Lodge three nights minimum stay . Our booking system may not cope with a single guest for the Guided Walk. If not we will refund the appropriate tariff. There will be no hidden extras as all taxes, GST, VAT, “Resort Fees” etc are included in the tariff.

Some international bank transfers now attract a significant surcharge of as much as 15%, and in some cases this has been deducted from the payment we receive, and the payor was not aware that this was happening.. As you will imagine this does not fill us with cheer and joy, and until we have this clarified we will not accept international bank transfers unless the full invoice amount is received…. please contact us as required.

Begin the day with Iris’s special continental breakfast, at your convenience. We Stewart Islanders try to ignore clocks as far as possible, so we do things to suit you. Perhaps followed  by a scenic road tour, the ideal way to get your bearings and learn a little about local history and village life.

A “Sails” guided exploration of Ulva Island is a must do and is part of the Sails Ashore package and as we generally restrict party size to a maximum of 6 you will be really involved. The local walks are a relaxed way of exploring the forests and beaches the community nestles amongst.

And our “Peoples Story” 2 hour road tour will explain the human story of the Island. What life was like here in the past, and what it’s like here now … all while visiting our beaches, bays and scenic look outs

If the weather is a trifle boisterous the Museum, Dept of Conservation Centre and local craft shops are an easy way of spending an interesting hour or two. Or if feeling really “indoors” enjoy our extensive library of local interest books and DVD’s.
.
You’ll also leave with a free DVD containing a short film and slide shows about Stewart Island and we’ll copy your digital images onto the disk as well.

Our Guests Say

Hello Iris & Peter,
Its been a few weeks since our lovely stay with you both, and we are certainly in a changed world. I hope you are both doing well and coping as best you can. We’re sorry Iris’ trip to Spain is impacted. I send my best wishes for your daughter in Auckland – what a huge responsibility she will be undertaking in taking care of any sick children as a result of this terrible virus….

i thought I’d take a moment and share some lighter things as well….

We took your advice, Peter, and went to the Redwoods in Rotorua – what an experience! We did the elevated forest walk both in the day and night. It was superbly done and gave us such a peaceful feeling. I also thought I’d share the article about the Albino Redwoods I mentioned – they are quite a sight to see!

Albino Redwood Article -Washington Post

All the best to both of you!  Cheers, Carol. 2020

Dear Peter and Iris,
Just a quick note and another big thank you for a lovely stay with you and, as always, for your splendid hospitality.  We are back in Armidale and Mei-Chan and Gavin are safely back in Melbourne.  Flying back into Armidale, it was good to see the New England Tablelands returned to a green coat (pic attached);  good rain has continued over recent weeks.

Best wishes, Indra & Heiko 2020

Hi Peter and Iris,
Well, it was wonderful to meet you both and we totally loved our Rakiura experience.
Coming home was very warm….21c at 8pm and a stickie night tossing our duvet off.
Thank you both so very much for all your special hospitality. You are wonderful hosts.

May you have a great Christmas……

Kind regards …..Denise and Roy  … 2019
