Sails Ashore Lodge
We chose the name Sails Ashore Lodge to reflect the close relationship the Island enjoys with the sea. Overlooking Halfmoon Bay and the islands of Foveaux Straits beyond Sails Ashore Boutique Lodge is a short 4 minutes stroll from the village waterfront, set in a private native and flower garden. Guests enjoy their own wing, each room with a private entrance.
Internal decor features extensive use of native Rimu timber, much of it salvaged from old logs, long sunk in a West Coast lake. Muted colours, original art and the best of fittings makes for a casual elegance.
We have instant online booking
Your Hosts Iris, Anne & Peter are fully vaccinated against Coronavirus

Please note both Sails Ashore and Kowhai Lane Lodges are three nights minimum stay . Our booking system may not cope with a single guest for the Guided Walk. Some international bank transfers now attract a significant surcharge of as much as 15%. In some cases this has been deducted from the payment we receive, and the payor was not aware that this was happening.. As you will imagine this does not fill us with cheer and joy, and until we have this clarified we will not accept international bank transfers unless the full invoice amount is received…. please contact us as required.
Stewart Island Electricity is generated using diesel fuel
Sails Ashore is Solar Powered
But we now produce 100 % of our electrical needs, and are completely "Off Grid", Excess electricity is used to heat our domestic hot water and central heating system and this has cut our non renewable heating fuel usage to around 20% of pre solar.. All cooking is electric, no more LPG. See More .......
Kowhai Lane is also Solar powered,
Kowhai Lane is "Grid Tied" Excess production is used to heat water. Production beyond the house requirements is exported, thus cutting diesel use in the wider grid. At night Kowhai Lane Lodge receives power from the grid.
Like Sails Ashore, all cooking is electric,,,,, No LPG
Begin the day with Iris’s special continental breakfast, at your convenience. We Stewart Islanders try to ignore clocks as far as possible, so we do things to suit you. Perhaps followed by a scenic road tour, the ideal way to get your bearings and learn a little about local history and village life.
A “Sails” guided exploration of Ulva Island is a must do and is part of the Sails Ashore package and as we generally restrict party size to a maximum of 6 you will be really involved. The local walks are a relaxed way of exploring the forests and beaches the community nestles amongst.
And our “Peoples Story” 2 hour road tour will explain the human story of the Island. What life was like here in the past, and what it’s like here now … all while visiting our beaches, bays and scenic look outs
If the weather is a trifle boisterous the Museum, Dept of Conservation Centre and local craft shops are an easy way of spending an interesting hour or two. Or if feeling really “indoors” enjoy our extensive library of local interest books and DVD’s.
.
You’ll also leave with a free DVD containing a short film and slide shows about Stewart Island and we’ll copy your digital images onto the disk as well.
