Stewart Island Weather, Tides, Aurora & Webcam
My Interest in the Weather
All my life I have looked over my shoulder at the weather. It started with shepherding on my parents farm, reinforced during my time “On the Hill” as a forest ranger and later as a fisherman. And even today as a tour guide, as I really want the best possible experience for my guests. And as I get older I find myself more and more prone to rust. Of course as a fisherman the tides were all important and during night passages especially to and from Fiordland I was often fascinated by the Aurora displays.
So this page is addresses those three interests

apologies for the line mid image. It’s a stay for our weather system mast
The image will enlarge slightly and focus more on the wharf on mouse over
This cam also doubles as a visibility guide for Stewart Island Flights, our local air service.. The rounded hill just to the left of the roof corner is Garden Mound and is their datum for cloud ceiling….. low cloud is not unknown on Stewart Island.
Anyone wondering if our Weather Station was somehow trapped in a micro vortex
in the period prior to midday 29 August 2025 (not sure how long)
can relax. Our station somehow managed to revert to Northern Hemisphere mode,
which saw our wind direction 180 deg out of kilter. All now sorted
