“We have had the most wonderful stay at Breckenridge Lodge. The food was superb – the best we have ever experienced. Matched with exceptional wines, we we’re truly spoilt. Thank you Malcolm”

Sails Ashore “Brilliant!!!!!”
Everyone knows that I don’t like B&B’s; however, Iris and Peter run the best damn accommodation we’ve stayed in – in a long time. Nothing was a problem, from booking a table at the pub so we had somewhere to dine, to dropping us off and picking us up after. Their knowledge of the islands ( Stewart and Ulva ) and also knowing the people ( and in the case of Ulva the owners – who were so welcoming ) was second to none. The room was well appointed and clean – bed was comfy, heated floors in bathroom. Breakfast was great as was afternoon tea on arrival.

“Whoever said Invercargill was dull – this is a gem”
We recently stayed at Safari Lodge for 3 nights while my husband raced his car at Teratonga. ….. This is a lovely old home – restored from the ground up over many years by Trish and Ray. Each guest room is extremely comfortable and well equipped – everything you could possibly need and more. The garden is a picture and the locality is quiet yet central. The very best part though has to be the helpfulness, knowledge and generosity of the owners . I had a major issue with a damaged tyre – on a Sunday (!!) – but with Ray’s help and his contacts (he knows everyone in this town) we were sorted and on our way north with the minimum of delay. They are a truly amazing couple who make Safari Lodge the star of the South. Many, many thanks for a brilliant stay and returning my makeup mirror which I left behind.

We established a very select group of members located in special places all around NZ.
We continue to review and renew our membership, as worthy potential members appear on the accommodation scene.

Ulva Island Critters

Ulva Island Critters My knowledge of insects is minimal to say the least, and apart from tiny moths, we don't often see them as we walk through the forest. But then again with so many hungry insect eating birds that is probably not so surprising. But we do...

Fiordland Crested Penguins

The Winter Blues

The Winter Blues ..... (not) Although we've had a couple of short spells of badish weather it's really been pretty nice. I'm still mowing the lawns ever 10 days or so, and I see a few spuds sprouting through the pea straw Iris has covered the vegie garden with. No...

Stewart Island Autumn Fungi

I’ve never seen so many puff balls in our lawn, and although not there yet, Ulva Island looks as if we may have another “Fungi Year”. The last being in 2003, when the forest was alive with species.

The Rakiura Track as a Day Walk

The Rakiura Track as a Day Walk We have a two night minimum stay policy at Sails Ashore, and 14 years ago we seldom had longer stays. But the last couple of years we've noticed guests booking for 3 or 4 nights, and once 8 nights. We've never had (or I hope...

Is it Summer ??

Just so we remember The last several summers have been remarkably settled ... last summer I never got wet while guiding on Ulva, and I had only had to lift the inflatable onto the davits a couple of times due to high wind. This year has been a reminder of what the...

Big and Little

Hookers Sealion Pair A couple of days ago we discovered a pair of Hookers Sealions on Sydney Cove .   Now that on it's own is not really all that unusual, but these two were male and female. We don't see females that often here. At a guess the male might have been 5...
